Steven A. Finkler, Ph.D., CPA
Dr. Finkler is Professor of Public and Health Administration,
Accounting, and Financial Management at New York University's
Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. At NYU
he is the Director of the Specialization in Public Finance and Financial
Management. An award winning teacher, Dr. Finkler is currently engaged
in a variety of research topics in the areas of health care economics
and accounting. He is the 2002 recipient of the American Association of
Critical-Care Nurses' Pioneering Spirit Award.
Among his publications are seven books. The most recent
are Finance and Accounting for Nonfinancial Managers, 3rd Edition
(Prentice Hall, 2002), Financial Management for Public, Health, and
Not-for-Profit Organizations (Prentice Hall, 2001), Budgeting Concepts
for Nurse Managers, 3rd Edition (W.B. Saunders, 2001), Financial
Management for Nurse Managers and Executives, 2nd Edition (W.B. Saunders,
2000, with Christine Kovner), and Cost Accounting for Health Care Organizations:
Concepts and Applications, 2nd Edition (Aspen Publishers, 1999, with
David Ward).
He has also published over 200 articles in many journals
including, Hospitals and Health Services Administration, Healthcare
Financial Management, Health Care Management Review, The New England Journal
of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Academic Medicine, Nursing Economics,
Journal of Nursing Administration, and Health Services Research. A

He received a B.S. in Economics and M.S. in Accounting
from the Wharton School. His M.A. in Economics and Ph.D.
in Business Administration were awarded by Stanford University.
Dr. Finkler, who is also a Certified Public Accountant, worked for several
years as an auditor with Ernst and Young and was on the faculty of the
Wharton School before joining NYU.
He serves on the editorial boards of Health Care
Management Review and Research in Healthcare Financial Management.
He is the former Editor of Hospital Cost Management and Accounting,
and served on the editorial board of Health Services Research.
Dr. Finkler was a member of the National Advisory Council for Nursing
Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from
1997-2001.
